Find out what’s inside the Stalin archives

You’re invited to find out what is “Inside the Stalin Archives” at a Baker Institute lecture and book signing on Wednesday, Jan. 13.

The event will feature Jonathan Brent, author of “Inside the Stalin Archives: Discovering the New Russia.” In 2007, the government of the Russian Federation granted Brent privileged access to its Stalin materials, which he used to found the Stalin Digital Archive project at Yale University Press, an effort funded by The Andrew Mellon Foundation. The purpose of this project is to digitize the entire personal archive of Josef Stalin and to publish a book series based on the materials in the archive.

Brent, who is currently executive director and CEO of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, will speak about his experiences in the Soviet archives and Russia, explaining how the Soviet past as reflected in these archives pertains to the present state of Russian society and government. He will also discuss the revival of the Stalin cult today throughout Russian society.

If you’d like to attend the event, we have a limited number of seats available. Click here for more information about the time and location, and to RSVP. The event will also be webcast live.
