The national convention for the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, is underway in Houston this week. Mark Jones, Baker Institute fellow in political science, recently talked to KUHF Houston public radio about what GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney can hope to gain politically by speaking at the convention.
While most black voters still support Obama, Jones said, Romney “is at least trying [to] peel off a small percent [and] send a signal both to African Americans as well as to the U.S. society in general that he is trying to reach out, that is he’s trying to make an effort.”
Vice President Joe Biden will also address the convention.
