JPMorgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon on the global economy

Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co., drew upon his experiences in the global financial services sector for a recent talk at the Baker Institute on the outlook for the global economy. The Honorable James A. Baker, III, offered opening remarks and founding director Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian moderated the discussion and a question-and-answer session.

Dimon became JPMorgan Chase CEO in January 2006, and was named chairman a year later. Previously, following the company’s merger with Bank One Corp. in 2004, he was the bank’s president and chief operating officer. Dimon was chairman and CEO of Bank One prior to the merger.

He began his career at American Express Co. as assistant to the president from 1982 until 1985. He went on to serve as chief financial officer and then president of Commercial Credit Company, which became Primerica Corp. and then Travelers Group. Dimon served as Travelers’ president and chief operating officer from 1990 through 1998 while concurrently serving as chief operating officer of its Smith Barney subsidiary. He became CEO of Smith Barney in January 1996 and then co-chair and co-CEO of the combined brokerage following the 1997 merger of Smith Barney and Salomon Brothers. In 1998, Dimon was named president of Citigroup Inc., formed by the combination of Travelers Group and Citicorp.

A graduate of Tufts University, Dimon holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
