A conversation with Brent Scowcroft

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Brent Scowcroft, former national security adviser for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, recently visited the Baker Institute to discuss foreign affairs — then and now. In a wide-ranging talk moderated by Baker Institute founding director Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian, Scowcroft touched on events such as the reunification of Germany and Operation Desert Storm, as well as the Arab Spring and America’s  “complicated relationship” with Russia, North Korea and China.

Scowcroft’s distinguished record of public service spans more than three decades. “I have never found anything more rewarding than working for something bigger than my own personal goals and ambitions,” he said. “It’s a feeling that is hard to replicate in any other way. I think that is something [young people] should all aspire to.”
