This year marks the bicentennial of a number of Latin American countries, including our neighbor to the south. Mexico is joined by Chile in its celebration of 200 years of independence from Spain this month; Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina marked their anniversaries earlier in 2010.
Erika de la Garza, program director for the Baker Institute Latin American Initiative, is quoted in a recent Christian Science Monitor article that marks the progress of the region. De la Garza notes that, though the region suffers from corruption, crime and issues due to income disparity, great strides are being made to strengthen democracy in these nations.
The Americas Project, part of the Baker Institute Latin American Initiative, explored the bicentennial commemorations across Latin America in its spring 2010 newsletter, which is available for download in Spanish and in English.
