Historian Allen Matusow, Ph.D., academic affairs director of the Baker Institute, is the recipient of the 2010 Gold Medal of the Association of Rice Alumni (ARA).
The ARA Gold Medal recognizes Rice alumni, faculty, staff or friends who have rendered extraordinary service to the university. Established in 1937, the ARA’s laureates program recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of outstanding Rice alumni and friends of the university.
Matusow, also the William Gaines Twyman Professor of History, has had a long and distinguished career at Rice as a teacher, adviser, administrator and author. He has won numerous teaching awards, published critically acclaimed books on recent U.S. history and served as dean of humanities. He is currently interim dean of humanities.
When the Baker Institute was launched, Matusow was named the institute’s academic affairs director and serves as a liaison between Rice faculty and the institute fellows. “It sounded interesting, and it’s turned out to be very interesting,” he said. “(The institute) has added a dimension to my career that I never expected and turned out to be remarkably rewarding.”
