Tonight, the Baker Institute welcomes speaker Ben Vinson III, Ph.D., who will discuss “Mexico, Race, Blackness and Shared Borders: Reflections on Divergent and Common Histories.”
Vinson, a professor of history and director of the Center for Africana Studies at The Johns Hopkins University, is an expert on Latin American history, particularly studying race relations and the experience of the African Diaspora. He is also interested in transnational networks, including interactions between African-Americans and Latinos (including Afro-Latinos). His current book-length project assesses the Mexican colonial caste system, particularly the experiences of what he describes as the “forgotten castes.”
Vinson’s lecture is co-sponsored by Rice’s Office of the President, as well as the History and Hispanic Studies departments.
